Eastern Washington’s Methow River has been a well kept secret. The Methow Valley, north of Lake Chelan and east of the North Cascades National Park, is far enough away (four hours) from the Seattle metropolitan area to keep casual weekend fishers from visiting it. Because of concerns for the Methow’s endangered steelhead, the National Marine Fisheries Service almost closed the river to all fishing in 2000. Fortunately, the best part of the river has been kept open on a catch-and-release basis from June 1 to September 30.
Since the river is rarely fished, its healthy trout population comes readily to the fly. This a great outing for those just starting out in fly fishing and in need of a confidence-building experience catching fish. The two sections of the river floated are, on Saturday, from Twisp to Carlton (our car camping site is across the river from the take-out) and, on Sunday, from Carlton downstream.
Our weekend is scheduled to catch this undammed river at optimum flow for floating and fishing.
The boating and kitchen equipment is taken over and back, so all you have to do is show up with your fishing and camping equipment.
